PAUL BURLISON

Paul Burlison was a boxing contender when his boxing teacher, Jimmy Denson, introduced him to another young boxer shaking more than a few boots, Dorsey Burnette.

The two of them discovered they had similiar deep interests in music. Having also been playing music from an early age, Paul had found himself in various bands as well playing on KWEM radio, where he sometimes had also joined in with Howlin' Wolf. Soon Paul met Dorsey's younger brother, Johnny Burnette. Also a Golden Gloves champion fighter, the younger Johnny spent more time talking music or making it than anything else. Soon enough the three of them were making quite a reputation for themselves in Memphis' music circles for their wild music. Playing with each other and variations from 1951, they officially became The Rock 'n Roll Trio in 1953. What developed from here has been a cornerstone of the Rock And Roll Story.

And a part of that important story, of course, is a loose tube after Paul's amp once hit the floor on tour - And, what Paul did with this "accident," giving Rock And Roll it's first distorted fuzztone guitar when he reset it that way for the trio's 1956 recording of the Tiny Bradshaw jump blues tune "Train Kept A-Rollin'," a record that has since influenced many great rock guitarists.

Paul recently released his debut album on Sweetfish Records, with many gueststars celebrating the event which hearalded Paul's historic remake of the Johnny Burnette Rock 'n Roll Trio's recording. A Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inducted recording, "Train Kept A-Rollin'" is given a blistering treatment by Rocky Burnette and Billy Burnette, the sons of Paul's Trio mates, Johnny and Dorsey Burnette respectively.

Having recently completed, with special guest Rocky Burnette, his most extensive tour since the glory days of the Trio and Early Rock And Roll, Paul is looking forward to signing some of the rare factory-sealed vinyl albums recently found in storage since 1982 when he got former Trio mates Johnny Black and Tony Austin for a rockabilly get-together that also included, in alphabetical order: Eddie Bond, Jim Dickinson, Charlie Feathers, Johnny Foster, Robert Geisley, Al Hobson, Glenn Honeycutt, J.L. "Smoochie" Smith, J.M. Van Eaton, Marcus Van Story, and Malcolm Yelvington (as well as liner notes from Carl Perkins and Ronnie Hawkins), for "A TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY AND DORSEY BURNETTE," on Rock-A-Billy Records.
